Rory McIlroy hails Spoty success with individual and team honors.
Moments before he was crowned, a nervous worry flashed through his mind. He revealed he was concerned, "Please don't let it be a racing champion again."
"It's been a great night for golf," McIlroy declared. "The sport was honored in such a major way, with the team winning and then with my award. It's a special evening for golf, and perhaps we can build upon that."
On this occasion, however, there was no late twist. The result was clear, allowing a delighted McIlroy to reflect on a standout evening for both himself and the team winners, who were named team of the year.
Constant Motion
Instead of opting to stay for the aftershow party, McIlroy was already thinking about his upcoming event. Having just played in a tournament in Florida and jetted to the UK, he was heading straight back to Miami.
"The last 24 hours have been a hectic 24 hours," he said. "I'm looking forward to a little bit of downtime over Christmas."
Drive to Improve
That said, McIlroy made clear he has no intention to slow down, notwithstanding completing the career grand slam earlier in the year. "I still feel I've got a several strong seasons in me," he claimed.
"More majors, order of merit titles, international events, that's the aim. But if you feel like you can keep getting better and have the hunger, that's the key."
Team Triumph
Meanwhile, fellow European Tommy Fleetwood, who was on stage to collect the team award, also applauded golf's exceptional night and his pal's award.
"Those are the memories that will remain with us forever so to get the public's recognition for that is amazing," he commented. "And to be there Rory win, I think he is so worthy so much."
After it was noted that McIlroy was only the third golfer to win the award in its seven-decade run, Fleetwood grinned before adding, "Not a very popular bunch are we!"
Future Goals
He is aiming to at last capture his maiden major next year but he acknowledged McIlroy still thirsts for more success. "As long as you want to be the ultimate competitor, and you're still motivated, you'll find things to improve," the 34-year-old said.
United Hopes
As he was leaving, an additional topic came up. Being a massive Manchester United fan, he has been requested to display his trophies at Old Trafford before. Might he be tempted to do it again after his recent triumphs?
"Provided that they halt the flow of multiple scores in Manchester," he replied with a smile. "They're getting better. There's a touch of optimism around."
After a truly spectacular season, it's understandable that he is focusing on the positive aspects.
