I thought I edged it - Carey on overturned decision.
Australia wicketkeeper Alex Carey stated he thought he had edged the ball when he was given not out on DRS on day one of the 3rd Ashes series Test against England.
Having been given a life on 72, Carey proceeded to score a excellent 106 to help the Australians finish on 326-8 at the end of play in Adelaide.
What happened?
The home side were 245 for 6 when Carey went for a cut shot to seamer Josh Tongue.
The England team appealed confidently, believing they had detected an nick, but on-field official Ahsan Raza was unmoved.
After captain Ben Stokes referred the on-field call, the technology reviewed by third umpire Chris Gaffaney displayed a significant spike but this came prior to the ball had passed the bat.
Gaffaney further stated he was of the opinion there was a space between bat and ball.
Consequently, Carey was reprieved.
"I felt a little noise as the ball went past," said Carey.
"Being given out would have prompted a review, though not a confident one. There was a definite noise."
Ongoing Scrutiny
Discussion has swirled about 'Snicko'' during the series after a number of unclear calls.
Bowling coach David Saker hinted the touring side may take this latest incident to a higher level with the match official Jeff Crowe.
"So far we've let it go, but this might push us to take action," Saker said.
"We've had doubts about it throughout. The focus should be on cricket, not technology failures. That's where we are."
A Special Hundred
His hundred was his first in Ashes cricket.
It was also an emotional moment for Carey, whose father died in recent months. Carey's wife was crying in the crowd as the batsman marked the occasion by glancing upward.
"To make a hundred here in front of home fans and family was special," said Carey.
"The reason for my look upwards is clear. I'm trying not to tear up. It was a fantastic feeling."
Previous Ashes Drama
This isn't Carey's first brush with Ashes drama.
He was the wicketkeeper who notoriously stumped Jonny Bairstow at Lord's in the 2023 series, resulting in a intense final day.
On his reprieve he added: "Snicko obviously didn't line up. That's how the game works; fortune plays a part."
"Perhaps luck was on my side."
