A minimum of thirteen passengers perish and ninety-eight hurt in train derailment in Mexico.
A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the cause of this incident,” declared the country's president.
The president confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The leader added plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the prior year. This rail line was a hallmark of his leadership's developmental agenda for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both rail lines was managed by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its responsibilities in national infrastructure. They were executed at an rapid rate, defying forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously raised ongoing apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an prior collision this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the disaster, the leader of a primary political opposition urged an urgent pause in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This stoppage was requested while awaiting a comprehensive technical review. The party stated that the situation "demands prompt explanations."
In reaction, the president maintained that the train had been operating in total accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and operation of these vital initiatives.
